Traditional Charcoal Steamboat at Goh Huat Seng Restaurant

Me and my friend paid a visit to this restaurant a couple of months back for a charcoal steamboat experience. The last time I had this kind of steamboat was in Cameron Highlands… probably around 2 to 3 years back. But because of only 2 of us, we could not order much. There are a lot of other famous dishes in this famous Teow Chew restaurant… and I've read that it’s one of the oldest teow chew restaurant in Penang.. hmm.. never knew when I had my dinner there :D

We did not specifically place any order for the steamboat ingredients, we just told them steamboat for 2, so the ingredients is of course, limited and basic.

Different type of fish balls, sliced fresh fish meat, cuttle fish, squid and “kangkung”

Chicken meat, mushrooms, meat balls, tofu, fresh shelled prawns, quaill eggs, vegetables

Traditional steamboat pot… with a small compartment below for the charcoal to burn and boil the soup up.. Have to be very careful though when scooping the ingredients out from the pot as you would not want to burn your hand from the pot’s “chimney”.

Notice that cute little battery operated fan? haha.. it’s to keep the charcoal burning… and they have to change like few times for us cause it always ran out of battery…

The chicken based soup came in the pot together with fried fish meat already added in the soup with chinese cabbage.. yum, with all the ingredients added in, the soup simmered up to a flavourful and sweet pot of broth.. perfect on cold rainy days to enjoy a yummy hot pot of delicious meal.. you can request for additional soup as the charcoal heat is hard to control, sometimes it dries up the soup in the pot a little bit to fast.. you wouldn’t want to have all your ingredients ended up burned and all stuck at the bottom of the pot.. haha… Since it’s kinda of a rainy season now, why not head there for dinner anytime soon? haha…
