Asam Laksa & O Gio (Aiyu Jelly), Weld Quay-Gat Lebuh Acheh

If you drive past Weld Quay all the time, these stalls will be very familiar to you. One of it is the asam laksa stall and another one selling cool refreshing desserts like “o gio”, ice kacang, cendol, and also pandan leave drinks. There’s other stalls available but I have not tried them yet.

P1450737-1 Uncle is a little grumpy sometimes.. haha.. but the laksa is not bad at all.. he will ask you if you want chili padi or not, and you need to answer him immediately.. else he will say, need to think means no need la.. haha.. P1450743-1

Laksa is at MYR 3.00 per bowl for big ones. This one I take away, that is why the presentation a bit buruk la… LOL :P

P1450748-1

Overall, laksa is good. The soup has got enough flavour, taste just nice…

P1350884-1  And here comes your best friend on hot sunny day… a bowl of “o gio”. My previous blog about it here.

P1350888-1 What’s inside is o gio, the jelly made of figs, canned lychee (one only) and lemon wedge, topped with shaved ice and some sugar syrup. Very refreshing, great as thirst quencher too.

P1350890-1  Price list… am not sure about cherry, but most will know chendul(cendol), kacang(ice kacang), aigaik (o gio) and cheicao (pandan/screwpine leaves)

P1350892-1  Business is always brisk! some will enjoy it there under the shed with food from the stalls, some will have a quick stop, eat and go in front of the stal and some will take away.

P1350894-1 It’s located along the street of Weld Quay, right at the end corner of Gat Lebuh Acheh.

I Love Yoo, Queens Food Market, Queensbay Mall, Penang

Once in a while, I have cravings for porridge.. just any porridge.. And if I’m happened to be in Queensbay, I will go for this one. It may not be the superior porridge you cook at home with loads of ingredients, dried scallops and dried oyster, but for the price you pay, it’s quite reasonable.

This is Set A, for MYR3.90, it comes with a bowl of smooth dried scallops porridge and a bowl of “you tiao” – deep fried crullers aka yau char kuay. Don bother locating the dried scallops, it’s just shreds that are not very much visible..
P1450687-1 Topped with some soy sauce, sesame oil, chopped spring onions and dash of pepper, the bowl of piping hot porridge goes very well with the “you tiao”.
P1450689-1
Light, simple meal, yet satisfying.

Some may opt to have the “you tiao” with a bowl of soya bean milk instead, just like how people eat in Hong Kong, for the same price.
They also have soya bean milk and tau fu far available beside the deep fried snacks such as butterfly bun, some called is “hua chee” and I’ve heard more vulgar names like “cow’s testicles” (in hokkien) hahahaha….also fried buns aka ham chim peng, both plain and with red bean fillings, sesame balls, sweet potato balls, and even mixed buns (the one with sweet sticky glutinous rice).

They currently have quite a number of franchise in KL and also Penang. Their website here.

Traditional Sweet Snacks, Kuan Yin Temple, Penang

Whenever I go to the temple, and if this auntie is around selling her snacks, I will buy some even thought I don’t really eat all of it. These are traditional sweet snacks, in which the usual ingredients are peanuts, sesame seeds and of course sugar. We do see some of these sold in the supermarket. Those I believe are mass produced and very commercialized. These instead, are freshly home made. It’s a dying tradition that needs to be preserved.

P1460568-1

Another reason I buy from her it’s because I really want her to finish selling off her snacks so she can head home. A very nice old lady, soft spoken and humble.  In the box are few different types of sweet snacks. Some chewy and some crunchy.

P1460572-1 And they are all coated with a lot of sesame seeds! The ones below square are the chewy ones, also known as “nui thng” – soft sweet. and the stick like on the right has another same I could not recall, also chewy. There difference between the square and the tick-like ones are one with peanut and the other one doesn’t. Other than that, those rectangle ones are the crunchy snacks. Each piece are sold at MYR0.50.

P1460574-1

Besides that, she also have the sesame snack biscuits and also kacang tumbuk, also known as “kong thng”. Besides being sweet, all the snacks has one main thing in common..sesame seeds.

P1460590-1

The darker shade one is “nui thng”, and the other one I could not remember the name.

P1460604-1

It is very soft and chewy….

P1460612-1

Another snack that can be seen at the supermarket. Crunchy sweet snack with lots of peanuts and sesame seeds. MYR 1.50 per pack.

P1460622-1 Kacang tumbuk… one of my favourite snacks growing up… it could be messy but it’s yummy! Also MYR1.50 per pack.

Seaweed Cheese Bread from Continental Bakery

I love bakeries… the aroma of fresh breads, buns, pastries, pretty cakes and desserts! Ahh…and I have one weakness when it comes to bread… I cannot resist soft fluffy breads and buns! Continental bakery offers fresh baked breads daily and it goes off the shelf quite quickly for some. I actually wanted to go get their yummy croissant the other day but there’s none that day! :( After browsing quite a number of selections, I decided to go for the seaweed cheese bread.

P1450765-1 3 fluffy seaweed cheese buns in a pack! Can’t remember how much, it was MYR 4.70 I think.

P1450766-1 I popped it into the oven, heat it a little and yum! Seaweed used is the dried chinese seaweed. This one, where we usually used to cook soup.

P1450767-1 Soft fluffy bun for breakfast with a cup of soy bean milk! Life’s a bliss!

Cucur Udang and Yam Cake, New World Park, Penang

Fancy some tea time snacks? You can conveniently find these at New World Park… (well, of course there are still plenty of places that has all these, will blog about those other time) Anyways, sometimes I do go to New World Park once in a while… I used to go every week before New World Park existed.. It is more famously known as Sin Sei Kai, the jam packed coffee shop with stalls along the roadside.. It was then very hard to find a nice parking spot, unlike now, parking is a breeze…

P1450715-1

And this is the all time must have when I’m there. I would not say that it’s the best, but it is one of the best I had so far.

P1450723-1 It’s crispy and not too oily. The peanut sauce is good too! Find it at Stall Lot H3.

P1450728-1

2 stalls away, Lot H5 offers a number of chinese tea time snacks, such as chee cheong fun, yam cake, “chai kuih” (crystal skin dumpling with yam bean, carrot etc), “bak zhang” savoury glutinous rice dumpling and more. Yam cake is actually just okay, if only there is more yam.. but texture wise it’s good!

P1450726-1

The bak zhang is just so so..  perhaps I’m very used to those home made ones… and those my mom used to get from the kuih seller  back in hometown… that is my favourite… my favourite bak zhang comes with peanuts! :P

P1450731-1The chai kuih is also so so only.. the skin is a little too thick and very fragile.. one of the best chai kuih I’ve had so far is the one in Super Tanker Food court.…

P1450733-1 Overall, if you are not fussy… all these are just fine.. :)
